Fairmined

What is Fairmined?

Fairmined is an assurance label that certifies gold from empowered responsible artisanal and small-scale mining organizations.

Why we chose Fairmined instead of recycled metals?

Mining is, unfortunately, a very damaging activity for our environment. Miners need to excavate a great deal of land and by doing so they ruin their habitat and produce a vast quantity of CO2. Further, mining gold can require the use of a considerable amount of mercury.

Hence, recycled gold should be a much better option for the environment.

Sadly, the gold mined up until now isn’t enough to satisfy the demand. Especially, due to the always growing need of the stock and electronics market.

Besides, recycled gold can only be traced from the refinery onward, making it very easy to slip untraceable new gold into the supply chain.

Fairmined Gold is, to us, the best available option. It proves to small scale miners and the world that it’s possible to mine gold conscientiously.

Fairmined ensures the miners are paid a fair price. It certifies that the harsh chemicals are used properly or not used at all, where possible. The presence of a premium permits to invest in mining operations, social development and environmental protection. Fairmined sets the standard that every mine should follow. It helps miners re-establish the disrupted ecosystem and invest in their future and on their land and communities.

Diamond and gemstone sourcing is an intricate subject.

There aren’t any “quick and easy” fixes. There are environmental, human rights and exploitation issues to say the least. The so-called “blood diamonds” should have exited the market with the establishment of the Kimberly Process in 2003. Most of them have. Unfortunately, until a third party, unbiased, control structure is instituted, there are way too many loopholes for diamonds derived from exploitation to enter the supply chain.

Nowadays, many different approaches are feasible and none of them is perfect or works for everyone.

We have updated our supply chain and decided to partner with Ocean Diamonds (https://oceandiamonds.com).

Ocean Diamonds works with a collective of professional diamond divers and source directly from them, ensuring that their supply chain is short and traceable and that the divers are paid fairly for their work. They currently cut the diamonds in Stellenbosch and Johannesburg in South Africa. Ocean diamonds, at the moment, is the company that best matches our ethics. The diamonds aren’t mined but rather found, diminishing the carbon footprint of the process. Unfortunately, they still offer limited diamonds and we otherwise use Canadamark diamonds.

Canadamark diamonds have a clear origin. Each diamond can be traced to its mine and the bigger ones have a serial number lasered on the girdle. Our main concern is that these diamonds are cut and polished in India. India has a longstanding tradition of diamond cutters but, sadly, at the moment, we can’t be certain that all the fundamental health and safety, human rights and gender equality protocols are followed. We are still trying to gather all the necessary information. Also, the carbon footprint of sending something across the globe and back is significant. We take this into consideration when calculating our carbon footprint. Only a very small percentage and mostly the best and biggest diamonds are cut in Canada. Our reseller at the moment is Stuller (https://www.stuller.com).

That being said, we are aware that mining produces an enormous amount of CO2.

Lab-grown diamonds offer an alternative.

A diamond is chemically and truly a diamond, in whatever way it was made. The international standards of clarity, cut, colour and carat define a diamond’s beauty, not its origin. The origin is “just” an ethical choice.

Growing a diamond is an energy-intensive process. Not only the growth of the diamond requires energy, but the construction of the machinery itself requires a great deal of energy and raw material. For these reasons, for it to be a reasonable alternative, we had to find labs that used only renewable energy. Our choice was the Diamond Foundy (https://diamondfoundry.com). This is the first carbon-neutral foundry, powered by the Columbia River. Please note that the diamonds themselves are carbon neutral but the construction of the plant wasn’t.

Since the diamonds start at about 0.8 carats, we use these diamonds only at the client’s request.

We are conscious that buying Canadian or lab-grown American diamonds doesn’t help or solve the problem of diamond mining in Africa. This problem is huge and complex. Often finding gemstones is the only way many people have to support their families. We are trying to find ethical African diamonds to support directly these communities.

Ethically sourced gemstones

Truly Ethical coloured gemstones are even harder to identify than diamonds. Sadly, there isn’t an international standard that identifies a gemstone as “ethical”.

(By ethical we mean that the mining, cutting and polishing of the gemstones doesn’t exploit people, their work or their land).

Somewhere along the supply chain, we have to do something that has become increasingly harder to do: trust a stranger. This kind of supply chain is based on trust and human relationships. Our suppliers are either in direct contact with the miners or have a close relationship with the small companies that manage the mines, the cutting and the polishing phase. Each stage is documented, but there isn’t a third-party revision. Our suppliers can tell us the origin of each gem and where it was cut, we trust them.

In the first place, we found our gem suppliers through the “Ethical gem suppliers” group ( https://ethicalgemsuppliers.com).

At the moment we buy gems directly from Kathy of Fairtrade Gemstones (http://www.fairtrade-gemstone.com) and Stuart of Nineteen48 (https://www.nineteen48.com).

Then we expanded our gem suppliers to include Wennick-Lefèvre (https://www.wennicklefevre.com). Wennick- Lefèvre offers completely untreated Sapphires from Madagascar. These sapphires come in all the shades of the rainbow and, like flowers, no two are the same. These dazzling gemstones are mined in Madagascar and cut and polished in Sri Lanka. Wennick-Lefèvre offers a completely transparent supply chain.

We have decided to use only natural and untreated coloured gemstones as the technology isn’t able to give us the same multifaceted dazzling variety of colours (yet).

Also, these ethical gemstones contribute to educational and restoration projects. But most importantly pay a fair wage and help grow a more conscious and well-informed mining community.

Renewable energy

We decided to power all our tools with renewable energy.

Only our bigger welding torch is powered by tanks of oxygen and hydrogen, we are planning to replace it with an electric welding apparatus to control the source of our Hydrogen.

Selecting an electricity supplier that reliably uses ONLY renewable energy isn’t as straightforward as it should, so we decided to be a part of a cooperative. “É nostra” is a non-lucrative cooperative that sells only renewable energy to its members. It provides a 100% renewable energy mix with most of its energy coming from the members themselves.

Offset our company's CO2 emissions

We estimated the carbon footprint of our company to the best of our knowledge and we decided to offset it with climeworks.

With their technology, they capture carbon dioxide directly from the air; removing unavoidable and historic CO₂ emissions. The air-captured carbon dioxide can either be recycled and used as a raw material, or completely removed from the air by safely storing it. Direct air capture, therefore, is one of the key ways to stop global warming by reducing the amount of potentially harmful CO₂ in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Visit https://climeworks.com for more information.

You can find our estimate for 2021 and our certificate below.

Our hosting platform

Our website is our shop window, we wanted it to be delightful.

Powering the servers that process all the data is a very energy-intensive process. We have chosen Site Ground as our hosting platform as it employs Google Cloud Platform. Google Cloud matches 100% of the energy consumed by their global operations with renewable energy and maintains a commitment to carbon neutrality.

Artisanal Jewellery boxes locally hand made

We manufacture one-of-a-kind-jewels thought out to be cherished and loved. We wanted our jewellery cases to be just as refined. Each one is made by hand in Bologna by a group of expert artisans.

We have decided to use organic cotton velvet because it moulds and changes with time: the edges will become a bit rougher, the parts you touch the most will flatten and it will become truly yours. Time will shape grace and harmony in it.

For more information: https://www.floriani-astucci.it

First impressions count. We wanted the first thing you saw to be about “la luce” (the light). What’s more unmistakable than the light from the sky? That’s why we decided to hand paint each of our external boxes with a different cloudy sky.  Our external box is made by skilled artisans in Bologna. Each one is made by hand with a type of paper that permits us to use watercolours on it without ruining it.

100% recyclable cardboard packaging

We use Ratioform’s “terra” products for our packaging (https://www.ratioform.it). Ratioform’s “terra” products are Climate Partner-certified as climate neutral. (https://fpm.climatepartner.com).

We use:

All these products are climate neutral, 100% recyclable (in the paper bin) and are made in different percentages by recycled materials.

"Il Cerchio della Vita" service

One of the remarkable aspects of precious metals is that they are indefinitely recyclable. We want our jewellery to be timeless, yet we treasure how people can change. To help our client’s love of their jewellery grow and flourish, we organize free shipping on any significant alteration or renewal of our jewellery.

We are very conscious that jewellery is a treat and not an essential good. We also know that our resources are limited.

We would cherish to do everything in our power to enable our clients to continue to wear our jewellery instead of buying new ones.

This service doesn’t have a time limit. Repair or service performed by a third party other than “La Luce” will void this service unless otherwise decided privately. This service is transferrable, proven that the jewel is original and unaltered.

For more information, please contact us with your new thought or idea. The price will vary accordingly to the project.

Buy a welding machine

As we strive to control our supply chain in the best way, we plan to buy a welding machine that uses electricity to produce Hydrogen and Oxygen to fuel the torch. This Torch would enable us to melt, solder and enamel metals without creating any waste and using only water and electricity. We plan to buy it by 2022.

Have our CO2 emissions measured and verified by a third-party partner

Although we try our best to produce the least amount of CO2 possible and we offset an estimate of our company’s carbon footprint, there is always room for improvement. We pledge to have our CO2 emissions measured and verified by a third-party partner by the end of 2022. We are still searching for the perfect partner to offset our CO2 emissions but our preferred partners at moment are https://climeworks.com,  https://native.eco and https://moss.earth.

Becoming a certified B-corporation

Becoming a certified B-corporation is a lengthy and ambitious goal of ours. We pledge to become a certified B-corporation by the end of 2023. (Only the revision time is about 8 months at the moment). To know more on what is required and what it means to become a b-corporation: https://bcorporation.eu.

Using ethical African diamonds

Knowing the precise source of all our raw materials is imperative data for us. We have chosen to use Ocean diamonds or Canadamark diamonds with this in mind. Anyhow, it is a goal of ours to work with Small Scale and Artisanal Mines in Africa to have a positive impact on these communities. That is why we are trying to establish a network similar to the one we use for coloured gemstones.

We are also considering diamonds from Botswana. Even though this seems like a more straightforward way to buy diamonds from Africa that are regulated, we have found some evidence of clearances of native people because of diamond findings. To know more: https://www.survivalinternational.org.

This alternative could still be viable until we can buy from Artisanal or Small Scale Miners in Africa. The aim is to pay the mining communities a fair price, create teaching programs for cutting and polishing gemstones and support the establishment of a self-sufficient and non-exploitative environment.

We are also closely monitoring the work Fas Lebbie is doing with Root Diamonds (https://rootdiamonds.com/). This is an incredible project, intending to bring the story of each diamond and the person who mined it to the public.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a certain date for this goal as it depends on our suppliers and the political conditions of African countries. We will incorporate them into our supply chain as soon as we can.

LA LUCE is a Jewellery company that aims at creating the best quality and most beautiful jewellery while always improving our effort to create a more sustainable, conscious and fair environment.

LA LUCE recognises that we must positively impact ethical business practices within and outside of our company. Ethical and fair work conditions shouldn’t be required only in those countries where the law (fortunately) enforces them, but also in countries where they are not ensured. As a business, it is our responsibility to implement programs to ensure that all the workers in the supply chain are treated fairly.

Our objectives are:

  • Responsible Sourcing.

We source our raw materials only from a selected group of trusted suppliers. These suppliers have either certifications or personal contacts with the miners or the small companies that manage the mines.

  • Fair Labour Practices.

We work to ensure human rights are respected in all areas of our business. And while it’s easier (but not guaranteed), to expect that human rights are respected in developed countries, we strive to ensure that no one is exploited along all our supply chain. We also commit to identifying, preventing and mitigating negative human rights impacts caused by our company.

  • Non-discrimination

We firmly believe in a zero-tolerance policy on discrimination within our company. We don’t discriminate based on race, disability, sexual orientation, origin, sex, religion or any other status protected by law. We won’t tolerate harassment on any work-related occasion.

  • Work hours and wages

We handle all our working hours and wages in full compliance with Italian law. We commit to paying our employees a salary equal to or above the national living salary wage. We also make sure that our suppliers pay fair wages all along our supply chain.

  • Child labour

We have a zero-tolerance policy on child labour within our company and for all our suppliers. Our service providers working with suppliers in at-risk environments require written commitment from their suppliers.

  • Forced labour

We have a zero-tolerance policy on forced labour of any kind within our company and for all our suppliers. Our service providers working with suppliers in at-risk environments require written commitment from their suppliers.

  • Freedom of association

We strongly believe in freedom of association of employees through labour unions to best express their point of view and bring forth their issues. We will therefore always respect and create a dialogue with them.

  • Safe and healthy workplace

All the supplies we purchase are traceable. We are happy to answer any question that might arise to the fullest of our capabilities. We know the industry we operate in isn’t perfect and we are open to any kind of dialogue or suggestion on our improvements.

  • Bribery and corruption

We have a zero-tolerance policy on bribery and corruption. Our industry is particularly sensitive to bribery and corruption. Therefore, any kind of gift should be proportionate or be visioned by the board. We accept payments only through traceable methods. We pay all taxes required by the Italian government.

  • Progress

We report on our website all our progress and assess yearly our new objectives.

They can be found on the “future goals” part of our corporate social responsibility page.

Environment policy statement

LA LUCE is a Jewellery company that aims at creating the best quality and most beautiful jewellery while always improving our effort to create a more sustainable, conscious and climate aware environment.

LA LUCE recognises that the climate crisis and environmental degradation are fundamental challenges of our time. As a business, it is our responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint, and take responsibility for our impact on the planet.

Specifically, our environmental objectives are to:

  • Track our CO2emissions and verify them through a third-party partner by the end of 2022. We also pledge to offset an estimate by the end of 2021 and the accurate amount as soon as it has been verified. Once we have an accurate estimate, we will also formulate a plan to diminish our CO2
  • To always implement our waste management in line with the programs offered by our supplier, Hera (https://www.gruppohera.it/). We already recycle: paper, plastics, organic material, glass, wood, metal, iron, grass and plant clippings and any electric waste. We also dispose safely through them of any solvent, potentially harmful liquid or waste oil.
  • To always use only renewable energy in our lab.
  • To closely monitor and learn more on how all our raw materials are sourced and encourage our partners to reduce their impact on the environment and provide support if needed.
  • To aid our clients to modify and renew the jewellery they purchased from us as to limit the use of new raw material.
  • To use cardboard that is either 100% recycled or is certified carbon-neutral in our packaging. Our packaging will always be 100% recyclable.
  • To comply with all the National and European laws regarding the environment.
  • To gradually change all our light sources to lower consumption LEDs neon lights.

These environmental objectives are publicly communicated through our website and marketing strategies and reviewed yearly. Moreover, we share them with our partners and our suppliers. We hope to invite and help other companies to take responsibility for their impact on our precious planet.
